But it also has a more\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/12\/09\/is-chatgpt-a-virus-that-has-been-released-into-the-wild\/\">nefarious<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/12\/05\/chatgpt-shrugged\/\">side<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/04\/12\/user-spending-goes-up-by-more-than-4000-on-ai-powered-apps\/\">AI tools are not going away<\/a> \u2014 and indeed has expanded dramatically since its launch just a few months ago. Major brands are experimenting with it, using the AI to generate ad and marketing copy, for example.<\/p>\n<p>And OpenAI is heavily investing in it. ChatGPT was recently super-charged by <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/03\/14\/openai-releases-gpt-4-ai-that-it-claims-is-state-of-the-art\/\">GPT-4<\/a>, the latest language-writing model from OpenAI\u2019s labs. Paying ChatGPT users have access to GPT-4, which can write more naturally and fluently than the model that previously powered ChatGPT. The new <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/openai-chatgpt\/id6448311069\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ChatGPT app<\/a> will be free to use, free from ads and will allow for voice input, the company says, but will initially be limited to U.S. users at launch.<\/p>\n<p>When using the mobile version of ChatGPT, the app will sync your history across devices \u2014 meaning it will know what you\u2019ve previously searched for via its web interface, and make that accessible to you. The app is also integrated with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/research\/whisper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Whisper<\/a>, OpenAI\u2019s open source speech recognition system, to allow for voice input.<\/p>\n<h3>May 3, 2023<\/h3>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/05\/03\/malware-chatgpt-lures-facebook\/\">Hackers are using ChatGPT lures to spread malware on Facebook<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Meta said in a report on May 3 that malware posing as ChatGPT was on the rise across its platforms. However, what makes the app different from the default\u00a0ChatGPT experience\u00a0or the dozens of generic AI chat apps now available are the characters offered which you can use to engage with SuperChat\u2019s AI features.<\/p>\n<h3>April 12, 2023<\/h3>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/04\/12\/chatgpt-italy-gdpr-order\/\">Italy gives OpenAI to-do list for lifting ChatGPT suspension order<\/a><\/h3>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\">Italy\u2019s data protection watchdog has laid out what OpenAI needs to do for it to lift an order against ChatGPT issued at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/04\/01\/chatgpt-blocked-in-italy\/\">end of last month<\/a> \u2014 when it said it suspected the AI chatbot service was in breach of the EU\u2019s GSPR and ordered the U.S.-based company to stop processing locals\u2019 data.<\/p>\n<p>The DPA has given OpenAI a deadline \u2014 of April 30 \u2014 to get the regulator\u2019s compliance demands done. (The local radio, TV and internet awareness campaign has a slightly more generous timeline of May 15 to be actioned.)<\/p>\n<h3>April 12, 2023<\/h3>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/04\/12\/researchers-discover-a-way-to-make-chatgpt-consistently-toxic\/\">Researchers discover a way to make ChatGPT consistently toxic<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>A study co-authored by scientists at the Allen Institute for AI shows that assigning ChatGPT a \u201cpersona\u201d \u2014 for example, \u201ca bad person,\u201d \u201ca horrible person\u201d or \u201ca nasty person\u201d \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/03\/01\/openai-launches-an-api-for-chatgpt-plus-dedicated-capacity-for-enterprise-customers\/\">through the ChatGPT API<\/a> increases its toxicity sixfold. The Italian DPA said it\u2019s concerned that the ChatGPT maker is breaching the European Union\u2019s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and is opening an investigation.<\/p>\n<h3>March 29, 2023<\/h3>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/03\/28\/1100-notable-signatories-just-signed-an-open-letter-asking-all-ai-labs-to-immediately-pause-for-at-least-6-months\/\">1,100+ signatories signed an open letter asking all \u2018AI labs to immediately pause for 6 months\u2019<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/musk-experts-urge-pause-training-042927625.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter\u2019s signatories<\/a> include Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak and Tristan Harris of the Center for Humane Technology, among others.
